AFFF, or Aqueous Film-Forming Foam, is a firefighting foam specifically designed to suppress flammable liquid fires by creating a barrier between the fuel and the air. Its unique composition allows it to spread rapidly over the surface of the liquid, cutting off the fire’s oxygen supply.
Individuals in careers that frequently use AFFF, such as firefighters, military personnel, and workers at industrial facilities or airports face a heightened risk of PFA (Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) “forever chemical” exposure. These compounds in AFFF can accumulate in the body over time and pose health concerns.
Several updates have occurred in Sept 2023 including the merging of nearly 6k individual cases into an MDL.
